A garden grows in Brooklyn

When we moved in a little over a year ago, the back “yard” consisted of  dirt, insane weeds, loads of broken concrete and glass, and a swarming mosquito colony (thanks to the rusted out gutters).  Nice.

With a little help from our friends, we put together an actual garden in no time.  Scott and his brother Ross built the planting beds in one long, hot day.  Scott and I laid a patio out of broken (Park Slope sidewalk) slate.  Our friend Julie generously donated (& transplanted!) the sprigs of green from her community garden.  The teak chairs were bought at a yard sale.  The firepit was a wedding gift from our friend Holly.  And the  flamingo’s made a surprise migration from florida thanks to our friend Denise.

Now we have a burgeoning urban oasis out back where we have enjoyed many a barbecue with friends.  We have lots of  plans for our shady garden in spring 2010, including a Japanese Maple for Scott and a grove of Japanese painted ferns for Yours Truly.  Stay tuned.

Yeah, those are my pink flamingos, you got a problem with that?

Cute garden! Much cuter not covered in snow…but I did love that picture with the flamingos popping through the ice.

Thanks Chris. Can’t wait for Spring. I hope some of our newly transplanted sprigs have survived the rough winter in Brooklyn.
