Radiant Heat Floor Installation
The electric radiant heat in the master bath was installed by our electrician this week. Â Next week they will lay down the white and black hex tile. Â I have to finalize the border pattern this weekend, which is a fun exercise in geometry. Â This bathroom will be in classic prewar style with the hex floor [...]

snowmaggedon in park slope, brooklyn
A tree fell under the weight of wet snow at St. John’s Place and 7th Avenue, ripping up the sidewalk as it tipped. Â It landed on a parked car. Â Thankfully, it was an empty car.

Repurposing old furniture
I’m a diehard fan of repurposing. Â Almost every stick of furniture in my home is either a hand-me-down from a benevolent relative or a thrift store find. Â I also like to trade “white elephant” furniture with friends. Â One man’s trash is often a DIYer’s treasure.
Let’s face it, decades old furniture tends to be of better [...]

Kitchen cabinet build starts this week
Our new galley kitchen will be beautiful, despite some budget compromises. Â Our cabinets are being custom made by a local carpenter. Â Initially we designed the kitchen with face frame cabinets and inset doors with exposed hinges, but this was way out of our budget reality, so we opted for more typical “frameless” cabinets. Â They will [...]

sleek appliances for our small galley kitchen = big budget
Redoing the small galley kitchen of our brownstone apartment is eating up a BIG part of our renovation budget. We have splurged on some pricey European appliances because they tend to have a shallower profile, which we need in this narrow space. Our kitchen is not only a workspace, it is also the throughway to [...]

le kitchen faucet nouveau est arrivé!
It’s a Kohler “bridge” (K-6131-4-SN)Â faucet with side spray in satin nickel. Â I think it will be lovely with our fireclay apron front sink (en route) and our cleft slate countertops. Â We need to hit the stone yards and pick out a slab next week. Â Fun, fun.

Inspiration: silkscreened fabric
I was shopping for milk paint over at Brooklyn General when I came across this fabulous silk screened fabric. I thought, “oh, wouldn’t that be lovely for some DIY upholstery on my dining room chairs”. Â But then I found out that it was imported, handmade and WAY outta my price range. Â Ah well… Â It was [...]

the hunt: Vintage Ship Lights
I’m trying to buy a set of three rewired vintage ship sconces from Olde Good Things in Manhattan.  These would sit above our staircase.  I love the graphic, industrial feel.  Hopefully the store will come through with three of them.  This particular vintage item has been surprisingly hard to find.  Of course, it’s always harder to [...]
