I have several friends who are looking for budget-friendly, traffic-friendly rugs that will pop with color and give dimension to their small spaces. I am also in the market for indestructible throw rugs as our tung oil rubbed, Â vintage heart pine floors will need protection in high traffic areas.
I’m not usually a fan of polypropylene products in the home, but I’m loving my new indoor/outdoor runner from Dash & Albert .  It seemed almost greener to go with something indestructible in our kitchen as opposed to constantly dry cleaning a natural fiber rug.  Indoor/outdoor rugs are perfect for pet owners as they can, literally, be hosed off or thrown in the shower for a quick rinse.
Hardwood definitely wasn’t in the budget for our garden level master bedroom, so we opted to keep the existing terrazo tile and cover it completely with these sisal carpet squares from Ikea. Â They are a snap to install (literally), require no glue, and each square can be popped out and replaced when it (inevitably!) gets stained. Â They are very practical and a definite bargain when compared to Flor carpet squares. Â (although the Flor tiles are lovely, eco-friendly and come in a plethora of color and pattern options) Â Carpet squares are perfect for closets and rooms where replacing a tired floor is not an option.
Here are a few links to budget rugs that will hold up to high traffic:

Thanks for the tip on the dog friendly rugs! And for sharing your rehab tips with us.
I recently won a gift certificate to the CSN stores and have been pondering the Dash and Albert indoor/outdoor rugs for our kitchen. We also have a small kitchen that gets heavy use, with 2 adults and 3 kids (only 2 of whom are still at home). I’m worried that the rug will look a mess and we are better to stick with bare tiles. How do you think it will stand up in our busy kitchen? I absolutely love the Dash and Albert colours and stripes and was considering the same one you bought.
I just found your blog and love it. I have been reading back through your renovation – very impressive. I love your kitchen. I’m partway through painting our cupboards and the painting seems ENDLESS. I’m looking forward to a nice clean kitchen again.
Hi Grace. I love our Dash and Albert. But definitely go with the synthetic indoor/outdoor version for your kitchen. I put it in the clawfoot tub and scrub it when it gets dirty. It dries out on the deck in no time. Love it. I feel for you on the painting. I’m so glad that Scott vetoed us painting the cabinets ourselves. We’d still be doing it. I’ll check out your blog tomorrow and see what you are up to over there. Best, ADD
