Kübler-Ross stages of (renovation) grief

I am officially holding my breath as the heart pine floors are being finished.  Scott was there all day today,  but I’ve been working a lot and haven’t made it over to the apartment.  I hope we are almost past the “happy accidents” phase.

I did see the master bathroom floor laid out earlier in the week and it looks fantastic. The guys are doing a terrific job with my little hex tile pattern.  And the matte tile was a great choice (phew!).  The tile doesn’t look brand-spanking-new, which is a good thing in my book.

Sorry Mom, no pix yet.  I’ll snap some this weekend.  Meanwhile, a little renovation levity….

Who new? The Kübler-Ross "stages of grief" model can be applied to renovation.

Who knew? The Kübler-Ross "stages of grief" model can be applied to renovation.

The whole renovation process has been a bit of a Kübler-Ross ride.  Thankfully, Scott and I are somewhere between stages 6 & 7 on my revised “renovation grief” scale below.

1)Denial:  Hey, we can fix this house up ourselves!  It’ll be fun.

2)Realization:  Everything in this whole place is broken and I’m pretty sure that brick wall is about to collapse.

3)Bargaining:  Ok, we’ll hire an architect, but we’ll do everything else on the cheap.

4)Insanity:  Wow, we can just get rid of that wall?  This place is going to be really coooool…

5)Sticker shock:  Um, Honey, do you really need that fancy shower head?

6)Acceptance (Desperation):  Ok, ok, just build it already!  Take my checkbook. I need a working shower.

7)Relief/ Abject Poverty:  Whew, that was fun! Let’s never do that again, ok Hon?  Rice and beans sound good for dinner?

I find it best to stay in denial. It’s easier. Just collect a bunch of really beautiful photos and just pretend that one day you’ll have that. It’s a much happier place.

Good luck with your renovation. Looks like you’ve got some great bones to work with. And NO Bambi antlers because Bambi DIES!

I miss Domino, Blueprint and House & Garden. I’ll throw Gourmet in there too. Sigh…
