Scott is busy in his art studio today building custom dividers for our new kitchen drawers. Â He’s using three inch poplar pieces, wire brads (tiny nails) and a dab of wood glue. Â This is definitely a “measure twice, cut once” kind of project.
It remains to be seen whether we will paint the dividers.   Right now I have just lined the drawers with that squishy white foam liner that you can get at any home store, but I love the idea of lining drawers with durable oil cloth, which you can find in splashy retro patterns at places like Pearl River in NYC.  Felt is also a great option for lining drawers that will hold fine flatware.  My decorating style tends toward muted colors in big spaces, with pops of wild color and pattern in hidden places, like drawers and cabinets.
Our kitchen is nearing completion.  The cleft slate counters are being cut this week and custom door panels will be installed on the appliances any day now.  We’ve opted to paint the brick exterior wall for now, in lieu of installing a pricey backsplash.  The backsplash will make a great DIY project once we are settled into the renovated digs.
Ah yes, and the wide plank floors still have to be re-oiled, because Yours Truly messed up the “final” coat of tung oil in the kitchen. Â More on that renovation misadventure in a few weeks. I’m hesitant to post about the floors again until I’ve finished that pesky DIY project!

I like the old brick wall without paint as pictured. Are you using white to keep the room light?
We are painting it so it is clean both visually & literally. I felt like the red brick would compete with the slate counter & I want to keep the colors in this room very cool and in the blue/gray/white family. The painted brick backsplash will surely be one of the first things I change when I get bored and need a DIY project. So, stay tuned!
Great work Scott on the drawer racks! I know how demanding that kind of work is. Reminds me of when I made a doll house from scratch. And the racks look great installed and loaded. I like the white “bamboo” chair Scott is sitting in too.
I agree with Nancy about the brick wall. I’d go slow on covering it up.
Also, thanks for the tip on the oil cloth.
I haven’t really been paying attention but your reno is coming along nicely. It looks like you’ll have a nice functional kitchen in such a small space. I’m happy to see that you’ll be painting the brick so you can at least wipe it down. And I love painted brick as a texture.
First time visitor; love your site and home! I came over from Brooklyn Limestone to see more of your wonderful kitchen.
We too have a couple areas of brick wall in our kitchen, covered with drywall right now. We are planning to paint the oak cabinets white and putting in new counters, and expose a chimney of brick, and leave it as-is (unpainted).
Do you have any pictures of your kitchen with the counters in, but before painting the brick? I’m curious about the contrast with the counters.
