Scott added this stainless steel rod last weekend to our custom kitchen shelving. Â The open shelving with a long pot rack was one of the cornerstones of our kitchen design. Â It’s definitely convenient to have pots and pans within easy reach of the stove and not taking up precious cabinet space. Â The rod was thirty dollars and I picked up the S hooks for ninety-nine cents each at a restaurant supply story on Bowery.
This pot rack would be a great DIY addition to an older kitchen.  You could start with wood shelf brackets from Ikea or any old hardware store and have a rod cut to fit the length of your shelf.  Our project took an afternoon to complete and required a power drill, a hammer (a mallet would have worked better), a level, some WD40, and a hefty dollop of elbow grease.  Scott used a drill bit that was exactly the size of the rod’s diameter.  I still need to touch up the brackets with a bit of Bondo, fine sandpaper and paint.

After cutting a stainless steel rod to the perfect length and drilling holes in the shelf brackets, Scott hammered the rod into the brackets. I very helpfully sat on the shelf to hold it in place : )
We were not happy to discover that the solid wood shelving we commissioned was actually made of cheaper fiberboard. Â But hey, we are not unhappy enough to invite our (generally wonderful) contractors back over.
Scott and I are quite smitten with our new galley kitchen and only have a bit of touch up paint and staining left to do. Â We’ll be putting the kitchen to good use tonight for Auntie M’s birthday celebration. Â On the menu: wild mushroom and truffle ravioli with a light cream sauce.

Sometimes we (cabinetmakers) use plywood or MDF or Particle core instead of solid wood for shelving since those materials are less likely to warp vs. solid wood.
Im not sure how its possible I’ve never seen your blog before but your home is absolutely STUNNING!! Great work, beautiful eye for classic design.
Just came to check out your beautiful kitchen after seeing your guest post at Mrs. Limestone and LOVE your renovations…just spectacular. Will you tell me where did you get those lovely large jars that you have on your kitchen shelf? They look great all lined up there. Look forward to reading more of your blog in the future.
I got the jars on sale at: http://www.chefscatalog.com/product/24824-frigoverre-glass-storage-jar.aspx
Thanks for your comment!
I am seeing so many pot racks since I got into home design! What, doesn’t anybody put their pots in their ovens like I do? =) It’s what my parents did and still do (when I was growing up, the oven didn’t actually work LOL).

[...] Some of you may remember that Scott and I recently completed our galley kitchen renovation, replete with hand-finished floors (which I goofed and still have to repair) and a DIY pot rack. Â It was featured last week in a guest post on BrooklynLimestone, but if you missed that, you can catch all of the action here and here. [...]
