Scott and I are having sweet dreams now that we’ve moved into our garden level master bedroom. Â The room is delightfully cool in summer because it’s at ground level and the three windows look out onto our quiet, shady little garden.
Before we renovated, the lower level was a 400 square foot rec room with a small mudroom extension leading to the garden and a tiny, moldy bathroom. There was a treacherous spiral staircase descending in the middle of the rec room, connecting it to the larger parlor level. Â We reconfigured this lower level with a solid wood staircase and landing that lead to a small hallway. Â Through the hall door, you enter our new master bedroom with a large en suite bath. Â We didn’t revamp the mudroom and it is currently being used as a miniature woodshop for Scott’s many home improvement projects. Â One of his projects, incidentally, was building the bookcase (pictured) out of a nook that was created by boxing out the previously exposed boiler pipes.
Aside from the new staircase and bathroom, the work down here was largely structural. Â Floating joists were repaired, pipes were reconfigured and hidden and the dropped ceiling was raised by a foot. Â New energy efficient windows, insulation and baseboard heaters will make it a lot more comfortable next winter.
My next project is to create a large upholstered headboard where the mirror temporarily hangs. Â There’s plenty of DIY decorating to be done in this room- it lacks any wow factor- but for now, I’m content to just sleep. Â You can see the bedroom in progress in this older post. Â Happy summer!

Hi there – I just found your blog today and it is lovely!!! I particlarly like the master bath – what an overhaul!
Just wondering two things about your master (if you don’t mind) – what colour is on the walls and where did you find those swing arm lamps? I’ve been hunting for ones like that for ages!!
TIA
Of course and thanks! The color is Ben Moore Pewter 2121-30. It is a “true gray” with no blue and only a minute hint of lavender in evening light. The swing arm lamps were presents from my Mom from Crate and Barrel. They were the least expensive of the sturdy swing arms I found, and I did quite a bit of research.
love that color.
I love your Bedroom DIY project. I especially love the paint color. We have painted our bedroom so many times looking for the right shade of grey. I think we may found it! Thanks.
