Barnaby’s bathroom needs a makeover

barnaby outhouse bathroom

My highly impractical outhouse chic bathroom has finally found its calling!  Though it does function well as a powder room, it’s not pretty yet and powder rooms should be pretty.    But, the tiny vintage clawfoot tub it houses is perfectly Barnaby-sized and the sides are high enough that he can’t escape from our sudsy clutches.  Plus the hand-held shower head is very handy for dog baths.  Poor Barnaby.

A reader emailed me this yesterday: “I don’t mean to be rude, but what exactly is Barnaby?!”  Hah hah, thank you for asking Samantha.  A Flat Coated Retriever +  a Boykin Spaniel = a Barnaby.  He is the lovechild of two South Carolina hunting dogs and Dad adopted him after he was kicked off a South Carolina farm for chasing horses.   Bath time aside, Barnaby’s adjusting quite well to city life.

Enough about that squeaky clean dog, let’s get back to decor.  Even though I made a shower curtain for this room a while back out of grey and white Ikea fabric, I’m on the hunt for a more colorful fabric that will inform some paint colors for the walls and the tub exterior.  I saw this bathroom recently on HGTV’s Sarah’s House and it reminded me that I had initially intended for my powder room to have a similar graphite, yellow and white color scheme.

But, I had a minor nervous breakdown a few months back when the pale yellow I picked out from a chip was practically vibrating on the walls of our small room.  So, I immediately hoofed it to Lowe’s and repainted the walls a calming putty grey.  The putty did soothe my electric yellow nerves, but it was a boring overreaction to an irrationally exuberant paint choice.  Then, I doubled down on the boring with a neutral shower curtain.

So, alas, my outhouse bathroom needs another do-over.  This room was definitely the “problem child” of our renovation and six months later it still looks like a before picture- argh!  I’m on the hunt for some pretty fabric for the shower curtain and then I’ll paint the walls for the third time this year.  Stay tuned for Scott’s nervous breakdown.  The poor man just wants a bathroom he can actually use.  Barnaby, on the other hand, is hoping that his bathroom will be out of commission for a long while….

p.s.  Thank you all for your incredibly kind and supportive responses to my last post.  Revisiting each and every one of your delightful blogs has inspired me to keep going with my own silly projects.  xxxxxADD

I can completely see that spaniel/retriever mix in him now. That’s a nice combo. Thanks for your answer! I know this isn’t a pet blog, but I’d love to see more pictures of Barnaby… It sounds like your Dad would have liked that : ) I’m glad you’re back blogging ADD, Sam

That farmhouse bathroom by Sarah Richardson is one of my favorites (I think I watched it on my DVR like 15 times). I kind of think you should basically copy the bathroom to a T! Yellow-sided tub, same (or similar) fabric for the shower curtain and white or pale gray walls…or I bet the putty would still look nice and would save your husband from a breakdown. :) My two cents…I mean, why try to recreate the wheel, right?!

Welcome back, you have been missed. :)

I actually love every inch of the bathroom as is. I am sure the new looks will be equally amazing, but the current state is still my fav :)

I think you should leave the walls “as is”. Just add a colorful shower curtain & accesories. I’m sure you could find a fabric similiar to Sarah’s.
I hope Barnaby is adjusting to his new home. I bet he misses your Dad too.

If you really want something vibrant (and I am not convinced you do after the yellow debacle), how about a Josef Frank-type print? Something about that wood makes me think of his prints.
Also, think back to Sarah’s farmhouse dining room–that fabric they put on the wall.

oh i just love “sarah’s house” and everything she does! she really opened my eyes to using some colors (other than gray…but that’s not a color!) and i just love her choices in fabrics!

so sorry to hear of you’re father’s passing…glad barnaby’s with you to help with the hurt. i’m sure he brings plenty of much needed smiles.

How about getting the ‘zing’ from the fabric instead of the walls? That way – you wouldn’t have to paint them and you could keep ‘em neutral (for resale value?) A yellow and white Ikat or herringbone? Something more playful?

I think a shot of pale yellow will look amazing in your bathroom. I just love the outhouse chic theme!

Barnaby is a lucky boy! His very own bathtub.

You are being entirely too hard on yourself about the current state of the bathroom — the barn wood, in particular, looks amazing. But I do love the contrast of the pale yellow sides to that tub. Just adds a fun bit of visual interest, along with the fabric. Go for it! Just because you didn’t get the perfect yellow the first time doesn’t mean yellow isn’t perfect. It’s a tricky color to get just right.
We repainted our kitchen from one pale yellow to another and it made a world of difference, taking it from the previous owners’ cool, almost flourescent pale yellow to a light, warm, sunshiney (that’s a word, right?) one. Go forth and find your sunshine!
